Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest

“Though Anker's personal story turns out to be of considerable interest, it is Mallory's that is the most compelling and stays with us longest. A man who thrived on adventure, risk and pushing limits, Mallory lived a life that was more dramatic than most fiction.”

The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest

In 1924 George Mallory set out in hob nailed boots and a tweed jacket to be the first person to summit the highest point on the planet: Mount Everest. He was last seen 800 feet from the summit - then the clouds closed in and he disappeared into myth.

Seventy-five years later his body was discovered by the American climber, Conrad Anker. Conrad found all Mallory's clothing intact on the body - the only thing missing was a photograph of his wife, Ruth. Mallory had promised he would put her photograph on the summit.

Conrad Anker, his life inextricably entwined with Mallory's, returns to Everest to retrace Mallory's last steps and discover the truth about the talented, compelling and gilded man from a bygone era. Could Mallory have conquered Everest 30 years before it was officially summited?

This documentary blends drama, original unseen expedition footage and photographs to tell the story of Mallory, the climb and his relationship with his wife. Their voices are heard through the private letters they wrote to each other.
