Shadow Magic

Based on a true story, Ann Hu’s valentine to the birth of cinema — set in China in 1902 — stars Jared Harris as an itinerant motion picture exhibitor and Xia Yu as a young still photographer who becomes entranced with the moving image. They are invited to present their “shadow magic” at the Imperial Palace, but with devastating consequences when their films catch fire.
