One Candle, Two Candles

ONE CANDLE, TWO CANDLES… is a Kurdish film about domestic violence and honor-related crimes against women. In a society where family honor plays an important role and forced marriages remain the norm, what happens to a teenager who refuses to accept a husband thrice her age?

Teenager Viyan is forcibly given to wealthy elder businessman, Haji Hemmo. When she runs out of the bedroom and climbs a tree, refusing to have sex with him, the respected elder becomes the laughing-stock of the town. In return, he punishes her by locking her up in the bedroom. The more the townsfolk mock him the harder he beats her. Meanwhile, traveling young artist Botan tries to reach out to her. This leads to Haji Hemmo’s resolve to kill Viyan by setting her on fire.
