Love & Justice is a film about how social and personal tragedy can be transformed into radical hope, how love can be sustained in dark moments and across generations as a young artist brings her murdered grandfather back to life. Through Beethoven’s opera, and with María Belén Espinosa Peña’s resurrection of the composer Jorge Peña Hen, Love & Justice looks at imprisonment and torture and the battle against tyranny. Beethoven composed music for these themes in Fidelio, as he was going deaf, isolated, imprisoned, and wondering if he, one of the greatest manipulators of sound, could survive such a cosmic insult. Love & Justice examines the power of beautiful music, the dignity of bringing art into the world. How, at its best, art can heal and repair us in difficult times.
