Feelings Are Facts: The Life of Yvonne Rainer tells the riveting story of one of America's most important choreographers and filmmakers. In 1962, Yvonne Rainer and a group of maverick choreographers known as the Judson Dance Theater revolutionized dance by introducing to the dance lexicon everyday movements like walking and running, performing in street clothes and sneakers, and screaming and yelling. Not content in dance, in the early ‘70s she introduced narrative filmmaking into American avant-garde film, turning that structuralism-dominated genre on its head. A MacArthur “genius” grant recipient, she is a breast cancer survivor who, at age 50, came out as a lesbian. Now 80, Rainer continues creating vibrant, courageous, unpredictable dances that mix artistic disciplines and invite audiences to question the very assumptions of dance and performance.
