Father of my Children
“Beautiful, profound and, given the gathering tensions of its story, phenomenally full of life.”
The Father of my Children
The extraordinarily perceptive new drama THE FATHER OF MY CHILDREN (LE PERE DE MES ENFANTS) from emerging young talent Mia Hansen-Love (best known for her acting role in partner Olivier Assayas' LATE AUGUST, EARLY SEPTEMBER) is a deeply moving portrait of a family undergoing a dramatic rupture. The film was the winner of the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and was featured at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival. Writer-director Mia Hansen-Love was also recently cited as one of Variety's "10 Directors to Watch." THE FATHER OF MY CHILDREN will screen at New Directors/New Films 2010.
Paris-based film producer Grégoire Canvel (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) has it all — a wife and three daughters he adores and a stimulating job that he's devoted to. On the surface he seems invincible, maintaining humor and charm as he tirelessly juggles the never-ending demands of his production company with his domestic responsibilities. But when Grégoire's reserves — both financial and emotional — reach a dramatic breaking point, his wife Sylvia (Chiara Caselli) and children are forced to cope with the profound repercussions.
"Compelling and utterly convincing... arguably one of the most aunthetic depictions of life in the movie business, it's also an incredibly tender and heartbreaking without ever getting sentimental. Hansen's ALL IS FORGIVEN was impressive, but THE FATHER OF MY CHILDREN is a big leap forward that confirms her considerable talent." -Gavin Smith, Film Comment
"The film not only has brains to spare, and considerable savvy about the cinema business, it's also guaranteed not to leave a dry eye in the house." - Jonathan Romney, Screen International
“Beautiful, profound and, given the gathering tensions of its story, phenomenally full of life.” (Joe Morgenstern, Wall St. Journal)
“A tale of cinema, a story about the agonies of trying to work outside the cinematic mainstream (even in France!). Yet what makes the movie so affecting is that it’s also a love story about a family.” (Manohla Dargis, New York Times)
