Along for the Ride

Nick Ebeling’s Revealing Portrait of Dennis Hopper Through the Eyes of His Devoted Sidekick and Right-Hand Man of 47 years, Satya de la Manitou

Nick Ebeling’s ALONG FOR THE RIDE is a revealing portrait of Dennis Hopper and journey of over four decades of friendship and brotherhood with right-hand man Satya de la Manitou. The film premiered at the 2016 Venice Film Festival and went on to play the 2017 Il Cinema Ritrovato festival, inspiring the current ‘restoration in progress’ for Hopper’s passion project THE LAST MOVIE.

Method actor, filmmaker, photographer, fine artist, art collector, and all-American madman—the many sides of Dennis Hopper are explored in Nick Ebeling’s remarkable documentary confirming Hopper as a major filmmaker, a fact often eclipsed by his legend. Through the triumph of EASY RIDER, the magnificent career suicide of THE LAST MOVIE, the overlooked masterpiece OUT OF THE BLUE, and a midlife comeback after plenty of booze and brawling, ALONG FOR THE RIDE is a vivacious work of film biography with a freewheeling style that’s only appropriate to its anarchic subject. Offering commentary from a rich array of figures from Hopper’s life, Along for the Ride features insightful contributions from Frank Gehry, Ed Ruscha, Tony Shafrazi, Wim Wenders, David Lynch, Michael Madsen, Dean Stockwell, Russ Tamblyn, Linda Manz, Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewett, Julian Schnabel and Dwight Yoakam – all set to a dazzling original score by Gemma Thompson of the critically acclaimed band Savages.

"What's ultimately moving about "Along for the Ride" is that it communicates how Dennis Hopper, by sticking true to his reckless muse, was an artist who changed things, and maybe changed everything." - Owen Gleiberman, Variety

"This rip-roaring tribute to a maverick artist trips along like a surreal odyssey, punctuated by lively reminiscences, choice clips and superb photographic material.” - David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

“A wondrous journey inside the mind and actions of Hopper. Full of insight, passion, love, wonder and stories of a friendship that define an era which could arguably have been the last great hurrah of true courage and revolt for America." - E. Nina Roth, Huffington Post

We originally went to Paris to make a film. Dennis really wanted to continue his directing career after 'The Last Movie.' I was trying to foster this side of his personality, because I knew how brilliant a director he was. Most of the French did, too. Dennis was friendly with William Burroughs, the ...
