Ode to My Father

As a child, Deok-Su loses his father and youngest sister while escaping from a war-torn North Korea. Left only with the ripped sleeve of his sister’s dress, he has little hope to ever see his family reunited again.

When Deok-Su and his remaining family members arrive in the southern port city of Busan, they are taken in by their aunt, the owner of a small shop inside the bustling Gukje Market (also the original Korean name of the film). While he, his mother, and his younger siblings struggle to eke out a living as war refugees, Deok-Su never forgets the weighty promise he made to his father--to always protect this family.

Motivated by that vow, Deok-Su proudly takes a job in a German coal mine, enduring crushing working conditions with the promise of a good paycheck to send his younger brother to college. In Germany, he
meets his life-long partner Yeong-Ja (Yunjin KIM) who nurses him back to health after a coal-mining accident. Even when being pushed to the brink of endurance, he retains his hopeful spirit.

Shortly after Yeong-Ja and Deok-Su return to Korea and get married, Deok-Su, driven by that same promise, sets off for the Vietnam War with his life-long friend Dal-Gu (Oh Dal-Su). Deok-su’s body
emerges from the fog of war battered and broken, yet his will to provide lives on. But, there remains one task left undone—to reunite his family. 30 years have already passed, will he ever be able to bring
back his sister and his father?
