In anticipation of the Magic Mike XXL opening, Laemmle Theatres and EAT/SEE/HEAR are pleased to present an earlier and no-doubt funnier look at the world of strip clubs and strippers. Filter All About Eve through Valley of the Dolls, add enough sex and violence to earn an NC-17 rating, and you might wind up with Showgirls, a deliciously bonkers portrait of an up-and-coming dancer (Elizabeth Berkley) who grinds her way from sleazy strip clubs to the flashiest nudie show in all of Las Vegas. Loaded with over-the-top dialogue, costumes, and cinematography - and a knowingly arch performance by Gina Gershon, the only member of the cast who seems to be aware of the ludicrousness of the proceedings - Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls remains compellingly bananas no matter how many times you've seen it.
